Introduction

During my first trimester at the University of California, Merced, I had to enroll in Writing 001. Going into Writing 001, I was afraid that I won’t pass the class. As I entered my first day of class, all the images, I pictured that was going to happen, It was erased. In fact, I was told what was needed from me and how the classes were going to be like. This made my transition from a high school English class to a college course excel.

I can’t remember a time where I was not taking an English class. Since elementary school, I learned how to read, speak, and write in English. Each new grade level, we learned a different form of English. In grade school, we started off learning those basics such as vocabulary, grammar, and speaking. It wasn’t until middle school, where I had to learn and write an essay. In high school, It was mainly literature and being able to reflect on what you read. Now in an English college course, I was given the ability to use templates to make my writing more interesting and better prepared for any future courses. However, it was still difficult to maintain this form of writing. As a bilingual student, I have to be careful about how to say things that will make sense to the audience, not just me.

Before coming to this class, I was a bad writer, speaker, and reader. As I attended each class it helped me improve my abilities. This course had five main learning objectives that were covered in class. The process, rhetoric, collaboration, research ethics, and craft are the learning objective that was included in these courses. From this course, I have learned many skills that will benefit me in future courses at UC Merced.
